The mythical foundation of Ercolano is in 1243 B. C., by the demigod Hercules. It was situated in an enchanting place on a plateau overhanging the sea. In 79 A.C. the town was completely buried by a burning cloud which transformed in a mass of mud that slowly covered everything without changing anything. Almost all inhabitants had the possibility to escape.
